If you are planning a Black Hills road trip, the Lodge at Deadwood is a practical place to park the car for a few nights. It is a casino-hotel on the edge of Deadwood, South Dakota, with free guest parking, an indoor water playland and enough on-site food to cover the days when you do not feel like driving. If you have seen it called the Deadwood Lodge hotel, this is the same place. This guide is written for people arriving by car: how far everything is, what the rooms and packages look like, and which day drives are worth your time.

We also tell you where the resort falls short, because that helps you decide. This Deadwood casino hotel is not on Main Street, the casino is not a poker destination, and winter can close some of the best scenic roads. Everything specific below comes from the resort's own pages or from official sources, listed at the end.

Driving to Deadwood

Deadwood sits in the northern Black Hills, and the Lodge is a short hop from the historic district. Most out-of-state visitors fly into Rapid City Regional Airport, rent a car and drive up. The figures below are routing estimates with no traffic, so treat them as "about" and add time in summer and on rally weekends.

The Black Hills roads are winding and slower than highway driving. If you want to see Rushmore and Crazy Horse in a single day, treat it as a full-day outing and leave early.

Parking and getting around

Guest parking at the Lodge is free, which matters in a town where on-street spaces fill quickly. You can leave the car at the resort and use the Deadwood Trolley, which is $2 per ride and stops at the Lodge. Its stops include Historic Main Street, the Adams Museum, Mt. Moriah Cemetery and the Broken Boot Gold Mine.

Trolley hours depend on the season. In summer (Memorial Day to mid-September) it runs Sunday to Thursday 8am to midnight and Friday and Saturday 8am to 2am. In winter it runs Sunday to Thursday 10am to 10pm and Friday and Saturday 8am to 2am. Confirm the current schedule on the Deadwood tourism page, since operators adjust service.

Plan your parking in the same way you plan the rest of the trip. If you are leaving a vehicle outside for several nights, our guide to protecting your car on a Black Hills road trip covers hail, sun and wildlife.

Seasonal driving tips

Summer brings heavy traffic, tourists on narrow roads and afternoon storms. Fall is quieter and often pleasant, but weather can turn quickly at elevation. Winter driving needs real preparation: tires, a full tank, a blanket and a charged phone.

Needles Highway in Custer State Park closes with the first snow and reopens April 1 at the earliest, according to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. Before any winter or shoulder-season drive, check SD511 for road conditions. Our Black Hills winter driving article goes through closures and what to pack.

Rooms: what to book

The resort has 185 rooms after a 45-room addition. Classic Rooms come with either two queen beds or a king. Families can look at suites with sofa sleepers, while couples have spa suites, extra-large suites and a two-story Executive Suite. ADA-accessible rooms are available.

Select rooms add an in-room spa, a fireplace or a private balcony overlooking Deadwood, so ask for those features by name when you book. Every room includes free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a coffeemaker, a microwave and a mini fridge. All rooms are non-smoking.

Rather than quote nightly rates, which move around, we are listing the packages the resort advertised when we checked in November 2026. Prices are per package, plus tax.

Packages and availability change, so check the offers page or call 605.584.4800 before you plan around a price. The rooms page shows the full list of room types.

Indoor Water Playland

The Deadwood Lodge water park is an indoor play area that is free for hotel guests and open year-round. Hours are 8am to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 11pm on weekends. It has a pirate-ship play feature, which suits younger kids best.

For a road trip, this is the feature that saves a bad-weather day or a long afternoon after hours in the car. Think of it as a playland rather than a destination water park, and set expectations accordingly. The resort also has a 24-hour fitness center, a business center, the Essentials Gift Shop, and a lobby coffee station and fireplace lounge.

Casino and BetLodge Sportsbook

Gaming has been legal in Deadwood since 1989, and the Lodge at Deadwood casino is open 24 hours a day. You must be 21 or older to gamble. The floor is smoke-free under South Dakota state law, in force since November 2010.

There are more than 280 slot machines, including keno and video poker. Table games include Blackjack (with high-limit tables up to $1,000), Three Card Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold'em, Mississippi Stud and Dakota Duel Draw, which has a $5 minimum. Tables run 7am to 3am Sunday to Thursday and around the clock Friday and Saturday. The resort bills this as the largest table-games area in town. There is no dedicated poker room, so serious poker players should know that before they come.

The BetLodge Sportsbook has 47 lounge chairs and 33 counter stools facing a large video wall. The sportsdesk is staffed 8am to 11pm, and the kiosks run 24 hours. It is 21+ like the rest of the casino.

The Club 76 Rewards program has five tiers: Club 76, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Elite. Perks include free play, hotel and dining discounts and birthday offers. Sign-up details are on the rewards page. Set a budget before you walk in, and treat gambling as entertainment that costs money.

Eating at the Lodge and in town

On site, Oggie's Sports Bar & Grill covers the day: breakfast 7 to 10:30am, lunch 11am to 4:30pm, dinner 4:30 to 10pm and late-night food from 10pm to midnight. Preacher Smith's Taproom & Commons is open Tuesday to Saturday 4pm to 2am and closed Sunday and Monday, with happy hour Tuesday to Thursday 4 to 7pm. The casino also has its own bar.

Hours can shift by season, so check the eat and drink page if you are planning a specific meal.

For variety, take the trolley to Main Street, where the historic storefronts are within walking distance of each other. The picture above shows the kind of evening streetscape you will find there. It is not the resort itself. After a day of driving, leaving the car behind for dinner in town is one of the better uses of the trolley.

Day trips by car

The Lodge works well as a base because the main Black Hills sights are each a day trip. If you are searching for things to do in Deadwood, SD, start with the historic loop, then branch out by car.

Historic Deadwood loop

Nearby and mostly trolley-friendly. Tatanka: Story of the Bison is just a few hundred feet from the Lodge. The Days of '76 Museum, the Adams Museum, Mount Moriah Cemetery and the Broken Boot Gold Mine are each about a five-minute trolley ride. Mount Moriah is the burial place of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Mt. Roosevelt and Friendship Tower is about 2 miles away.

You can do this loop in a half day and not touch the car, which makes it a good first-afternoon activity after arriving. The Wikipedia entry on Deadwood gives helpful background on the town's history.

Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway

Spearfish is about 13 miles and 18 minutes from the Lodge, and the scenic byway runs through the canyon beyond town. Expect cliffs, creeks and waterfalls, with the best colors in fall. Allow a few hours with stops, and check conditions in winter, when ice and snow can affect the road.

Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Needles Highway loop

This is the big day. The Deadwood to Mount Rushmore drive is about 51 miles and 1 hour 20 minutes from the Lodge, and Crazy Horse Memorial is about 56 miles and 1 hour 30 minutes. Needles Highway, in Custer State Park, connects the area with granite spires and narrow tunnels. Check current entrance and parking rules for each site before you go.

Because the loop covers a lot of mountain road, leave early, fill the tank, and watch for wildlife in the park, especially around dawn and dusk. Needles Highway closes with the first snow and reopens April 1 at the earliest, so this loop looks different in winter. The state park scenic drives page has the current notices.

Sturgis

Sturgis is about 13 miles and 16 minutes away, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum is roughly a 15-minute drive. The 2027 rally runs August 6 to 15, and that week changes everything about driving in the area. Book rooms early, give yourself extra time and expect motorcycles on every road. Our Sturgis Rally week by car guide goes deeper on traffic and timing.

Groups, weddings and meetings

The Pine Crest Ballroom is 13,000 square feet and holds up to 1,200 people, or 1,000 banquet-style, and can be divided into four sections. Four conference rooms of about 736 square feet each (Roosevelt, Bullock, Russell and Cody) fit 40 to 50 people, and there is a boardroom for 12. See the facilities page.

For weddings, the resort offers custom packages. Contact [email protected] or call 605.584.4800. If guests are driving in from different directions, send them a drive-time table like the one above so they can plan their arrival.
